What Motherhood Has Taught Me: A Series Pt. 8

Guest Blog Post By: Taren Storrs

I’ve learned so many powerful things about motherhood that it’s shaped not only the mother that I am but also the way I see mothers in our society.

Being a mother has developed everything in me. It’s a journey where every day, every season, everything can be a reflective experience. I’ve learned about the ability of your mind, heart, and body to expand and grow in ways that my pre-Mom brain didn’t realize were even possible. The motherhood experience is fascinating in how there is no one way to succeed at it and every mother can be slightly different from the next, yet there are some core fundamentals that make for us to share a common bond. It’s the dichotomy of understanding and accepting that nothing can fully prepare you for it, yet the openness to learn as you go is fundamental to your sanity.

If there’s something that I’ve learned and worked hard to put into practice, it’s the true belief that “YOU ARE ENOUGH, actually MORE than enough!” There’s a big emphasis in motherhood on “sacrifices for the kids” and “prioritizing your family,” but my truth is even when no one else tells me, I remind myself that I am ENOUGH. I’m making the best decisions I can at the time they have to be made with the information and circumstances in front of me; that is more than enough. Seeking and living in that peace of mind and striving for that serenity has been a staple in my motherhood journey and one that I hope to impart to my kiddo. Once I got past the sleepless nights, the emotional valley of breastfeeding and pumping, and had some huge health scares, I prioritized peace and calmness over perfection and strung out insanity! That’s been my focus. Not all the pressures of excellence that try to creep in every day. That reminder of being more than ENOUGH is a space I try to demonstrate so that it becomes a cornerstone to my little lady’s world.
