How To Talk To Your Children About Race

When my friend and sorority sister Stephanie Thurling asked me to write a guest post for her blog Raising Prayerful Kids to tackle the issue of racism and how to talk to children about it, I hesitated for a few minutes. At the time of her ask, my emotions were fried, and I didn’t think I had it in me to have one more discussion about race and what is currently happening in our country. But then something interesting happened; God reminded me of a discussion I had with Him four years ago when Philando Castile was murdered.

Out of feelings of hopelessness, I asked God what I could do to shine a light on the injustices that people of color face, and somehow aid in advancing the message of change. He so clearly spoke to me and told me that my part in this fight would be found in the conversations. He asked me if I would be willing to have them – as uncomfortable as they might be – and I said, “Yes.”

So, exactly thirteen minutes later, I told Steph that I was all in, and out of her invitation and God’s strength came this blog post. I hope you enjoy it.
